Garifuna Wake/She is Speaking. Mayan Garden Series (Two-Sided Veil Painting) – $1,100 | Free Shipping
Part of the Mayan Garden Series of two-sided tapestry “veils,” exploring the properties of the jungles and wonders of Belize.
This veil’s one side, Garifuna Wake, shows Ludwig Palacio of the WeArt gallery in Punta Gorda Belize is a champion of his culture. A traditional wake was going on in his neighborhood; they had been drumming for days. When we walked by the shaman came up to us and asked me to go inside where a crowd were already dancing to the drumming. I was quickly taught the men’s dance, and I felt that there was no ceiling above us only spirits.
The second side, She is Speaking, I turn to say something to the woman dancing beside me and her eyes roll up in her head and faints, caught by the women around her she jumps up speaking with the voice of the dead woman. She was angry and needed to settle a few things before moving on.
Painted using Spanish moss and ferns, creating layered, emerging forms.
