Part of the Mayan Garden Series of two-sided tapestry “veils,” exploring the properties of the jungles and wonders of Belize.
This veil’s one side, Walking on Clouds, shows a storm that came into my camp in the jungle and tore my tarp away soaking me to the bone. There was nothing I could do but sit in the rain and felt like I was floating through the raindrops until I found myself standing on the clouds looking at the moon and the lightening flashing in the clouds below. Then the thought that, “I can’t walk on a cloud” entered my head and I plummeted down to my water filled hammock with a splash.
The second side, Wet in the jungle, depicts 20 years after I was cured of toxins in my brain, every winter I would camp for months in the jungle behind Santiago’s house. I was learning how people lived and thought for the last one hundred thousand years or so. I learned about plants, the spirits and the world we had forgotten in the rush of modern life. This is a painting after I was walking on the clouds, I found my tarp the next day a quarter mile away.
Painted using Spanish moss and ferns, creating layered, emerging forms.
