Monkey Blues. Mayan Garden Series (Two-Sided Veil Painting) – $1,100 | Free Shipping
Part of the Mayan Garden Series of two-sided tapestry “veils,” exploring the properties of the jungles and wonders of Belize.
This veil’s one side shows Aurora Saqui, a Mayan healer, sent me to Pike’s Hill for a smudge, burning sacred herbs to cleanse. I was told to use a blanket to create a smoke-filled tent of sorts allowing the smoke to be absorbed. When I removed the blanket I found myself surrounded by a tribe of howler monkeys who began to sing a slow and sad song…monkey blues. The second side shows the leader of the tribe watching me about 20 feet away as the others slipped away. His eyes burned into mine imploring me to pay attention to the story they just shared…I have no human words to explain.
Painted using Spanish moss and ferns, creating layered, emerging forms.
